Is this your first time using a journal-based kinkmeme? Not sure where to start to find prompts, or how to make new ones? This is the post for you! 

Basics

The kinkmeme is made up of comments on a journal post. Prompts are posted as top-level comments, and fills are posted as replies to those prompts. 

As more prompts are posted, the comments section gets longer page by page. More recent prompts can be found on higher-numbered pages, but to find most recent fills you will need to use flat view (see Navigation section below). 

How To Prompt

Have an idea for a fic you want someone to write for you? 
From the coldboys main page, hit this button on the appropriate post:

On the permalink page of the appropriate post, navigate down to this button (it does the same thing): 



In the comment field that pops up, make sure "Anonymous" is selected (and not a Dreamwidth account if you're logged in) and write your prompt in the format: [PAIRING], [TROPE/KINK/IDEA]

Make sure that your subject line keeps it short and snappy — a basic version of the concept in a few words. Then, in the body of the comment, you can expand on the idea: a summary, additional characters, any other details or tropes that the writer could optionally include. A sentence or two, or a short paragraph, is ideal—you don't want to overwhelm a possible filler with too many details. 






Once you've finished, hit "Post Comment" and voila! You've prompted! 



How To Fill

If you've written a fill for a prompt, and are ready to post it, navigate to the either the prompt's top-level comment permalink or the page of the kinkmeme that it's on, and hit "Reply to this": 



Again, make sure to select "Anonymous," and in the subject line of your comment, remove the default "Re:" text and replace it with a fill title in the format: "FILL: [TITLE], [PAIRING], [TROPES/KINKS/IDEA], [RATING], [ANY WARNINGS]" 

The middle section in between the pairing name and the rating is dealer's choice. You can copy over the trope/idea from the original prompt, and/or add any other relevant tags (like if you added a specific kink not specified by OP), or you can just bypass that section altogether.



Then add your fill's text in the main body of the comment, formatting with HTML as needed, and hit "Post Comment."

If your fill is longer than the Dreamwidth comment character limit (16,000 characters) you'll need to split it up — post additional parts of your fill as replies to the first part (NOT as direct replies to the OP) and mark them in the subject line with [1/2], [2/2] etc after the rating. 

Navigation

If you are looking to see everything posted to the kinkmeme, prompts and full-length fills included, you can use the links labeled "Regular view." This is the Dreamwidth default, and will show you comments in threaded format: e.g. prompts and the fills (if any) below them. So if you're on a page with a lot of fills, it will involve a lot of scrolling. 

To see all of the most recent comments posted to a kinkmeme post, displayed as a continuous (flat) list in order of when they were posted, use "Flat view - most recent." This will jump you to the last (most recent) page of flat view. On each page of flat view, new comments are displayed from oldest at the top to most recent at the bottom. So within flat view, you can find the most recent comment on the kinkmeme overall at the bottom of the final page. Navigate backwards page by page to view older comments. 

To view only prompts, not fills, use top-level view. This is the most handy when browsing the kinkmeme for something to write. "Top level view - first page" will show you all prompts beginning with the oldest, and "Top level view - last page" will show you the most recent page of prompts. 




FAQ

How do I search the kinkmeme for a prompt to make sure I'm not repeating something already requested? 
Unfortunately, you can't. Your best bet is to go page by page using CTRL+F to search for keywords. 

Can I edit a comment if I've made a mistake? 
No, but if you respond to your own comment with an ATTN: MODS subject line, the mods can swoop in and delete the comment (and the response) so you can resubmit a corrected version.

From January 1 to January 7, both prompt posts will be CLOSED for new top-level comments (e.g. prompts), in order to encourage new fills for existing prompts. 

From now until January 1, you can post new prompts and choose which ones you will write for the fest! 

And after the fest ends, all new fills will be collected in a round-up post!
