Hodgson/Hickey, fucky dynamics + happyish end
(Anonymous) 2022-10-29 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)It could be light-hearted, for example maybe Hickey is trying the most dastardly rat schemes against Hodgson but (un)fortunately he is in the comedy genre and Hodgson is like a cartoon character infuriatingly favored by the comedy gods such that the anvil is perpetually barely missing. And Hickey scams himself into a sort of love.
Or it could be as dark as you like, I am hot for Hodgson whump, I love a sexy dark fuck ratboy being cruel - but I do also want a little change of heart at the end, to where Hickey’s invested in keeping Hodgson alive and even being nice to him sometimes and they’ve become this weirdly but firmly
Or whatever you want to do, the above is just examples but I would be delighted by anything for this pairing.

(Anonymous) 2023-01-06 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)After William Gibson had died, Cornelius Hickey has started acting strangely. George had seen the others notice as well. The marines would talk between them, while Hickey looked stood immobile for long hours, staring at the sky. George found himself hoping for a mutiny within a mutiny, for a time, for the men to believe Captain Crozier and shoot Hickey dead and return to the larger group, but it didn't happen.
Because on the third day, they saw smoke on the horizon.
It was Cornelius Hickey who saw it first. If any one else had, maybe things would have turned differently. But they were in the camp, sitting or sprawled on the rocks, sparing every drop of energy they could, hungry again, and they heard a great joyous cry coming down for the hill above.
"Stand up and walk, Lazarus," Hickey had said, or maybe "up and at 'em, boys," George couldn't quite remember, and pulled at his ear until he had walked all the way up the hill, back awkwardly bent because he was taller. Hickey had put the spyglass in George's hand, the touch of his bony hand feverish against his wrists, and George had told him -- whalers, two days march, south-south-west. They had put everything they didn't take with them on a great pyre, had thrown the doctor's body on it as well. His blood had been congealed thick as tar on the inside of his wrists. It was better, George thought, though he was still so hungry, that they didn't have time to waste. He was happy he had that thought, because it meant there was something decent in him still. They dragged Captain Crozier after them for more than a day, but he fought, snarled, begged them to turn back, to warn the others, and in the end one of the marines took the cuffs off him.
They laughed as they watched him stumble away into the grey empty. "Here's a man who doesn't want to live," Desvoeux said, "and he got us all into this mess," and made like he would rise his rifle, but the marine who had let Captain Crozier go shouldered him, and Desvoeux gave a painful cry, and let his arm fall, and then they kept walking.
And all the while Cornelius Hickey was going madder and madder, up on the empty boat they were still dragging uselessly behind them, but by then when he talked about the Breathe of God George could see the others believed him. They would not go back to England, George could see. Hickey talked about islands, on the other side of the cold, where man had not been chased from Eden, and lived free and naked among the beasts and trees.
When Cook fell, Hickey said leave him, and the others didn't even stop walking. George understood that it was better for Hickey and his men, because the man had outlived his usefulness, and he could have talked. And George started being afraid.
Because there were no maps to be read, and they had never asked him to pull, and Desvoeux knew enough about orientation that he could lead them to the boats, and if they did not plan to go back to England, they did not need George to lie for them.
They walked all through the night, and on what would have been morning George fell on one knee. But Hickey said, bring him here, and the men pushed him over the railing into the boat where Hickey was, and George found himself sprawled at the man's feet.
"Stay," Hickey had said, smiling, and George had trembled. And then Hickey had put a hand on his head, and George had cringed -- but he had not moved away. After a time, Hickey's fingers had slipped beneath the collar of his shirt, and without quite wanting to, George had learnt into the warmth until his cheek rested against Hickey's bony knee.
Hickey's nails were too long and scratched at his skin, and George did not know why he was not dead. His knees hurt from the jolting of the hull over the rocks. Hickey mumbled under his breath, and when George listened closely he could recognise names -- "Billy, it's how I told you, love" he heard, and tried hard not to listen anymore. George found despite the uncomfortable position, and the scratching of Hickey's nails, and the way his knees knocked against the wood, and the fear, he could fall into a half-sleep.
"Good," Hickey said, talking to the air again. "Good dog," he said, and George wondered whether Neptune was on the boat with them as well. He remembered poor Neptune, and how good he had tasted. On hindsight, this was where all had started to go wrong. And then he felt pain as Hickey grabbed his hair and shook, and he blinked up, and Hickey was looking down at him. "Good dog," he said again, with a mocking, knowing twinkle in his beady eyes and a smile which brought up the apples of his cheeks, and he had been petting at George for such a long while, he really had no excuse not to have realised before that he was being mocked.
Hickey presented his hand, palm up. And George...
Well, George was scared. And George wanted to live. And so, despite the tightness he felt behind his eyes, he lapped at Hickey's palm.
He felt a warmth bloom in his cheeks, and he thought, surely shame. And he was happy he had that thought. Because it must mean, there was something decent in him still. Mustn't it?
