The expedition is rescued, and the surviving mutineers are sentenced to hang.

At some point prior to the mutiny, Little and Tozer had had an affair. Against his better judgment, Little now goes to visit Tozer a last time.

Go where you want from there, whether angsty or bittersweet or unexpected last minute prison break adventure.

Edward used to know how long it takes, from the moment the condemned man leaves his cell until he is declared dead. Somebody told him once. An interesting fact which he has never expected to be pertinent to his own life. Surely there must be a man who stands with a pocket watch — a doctor — to record the precise minute of death. He wonders if Tozer knows. Whether they have told him exactly how the Law will take his life.

They were ‘Edward’ and ‘Sol’ once, but not now. Something has come between them, whether it is rank or shame. Or perhaps it is merely that Tozer will be dead soon and he will not, and there is no bridging that divide.

Edward cannot meet his eyes, but nor does he want to look down. If he sees the man’s hands, he will have to think about all the places those hands have been, in every sense.

“They aren’t going to hang him,” says Tozer. “Not guilty by reason of insanity.” No need to say the name. It was a foregone conclusion that that devil would escape the noose, the way he was blabbing about bears who were soul-eating gods. The men who followed him have not been so fortunate.

“Will you come and watch?” asks Tozer, and Edward nearly answers sincerely until he realises that he is being mocked. He will not be there, of course. He has committed no crime that anyone can hang him for, but he has been tested and found wanting a thousand times over, and a coward he remains.

The guard calls out that time is up. Edward hesitates. How should one say goodbye to a man who is going to die — a handshake, or a touch on the arm — but already the guard is ushering him away and the opportunity has gone. He has fumbled and missed his moment, as he always does.

Ahhhhhh my feelings… and Edward’s feelings, and the brutal non-closure of this last moment missed. What to say, what to feel, what to do, and no more time to decide after all.

This is FANTASTIC, every line is a delicacy! They were ‘Edward’ and ‘Sol’ once, but not now. Something has come between them, whether it is rank or shame. w h o o f I love the sense of missed opportunity that runs through the whole fic, and then becomes so tangible at the end. So good!

The poignancy of that last paragraph really got me—I was startled by how intensely I cared and how perfectly it encapsulated how Edward is just always a little out of step with what’s happening around him. Very well done in such a short ficlet.
